Your Most Discussed Work of Art
Like millions of others, I collected baseball cards as a kid. There was no bigger thrill than opening a pack and getting a player from my favorite team, the Philadelphia Phillies. Like most people, I stopped collecting cards as I grew up and eventually packed them in a box and put them in the basement. Luckily, I was also one of those whose mother knew better than to throw the cards out simply because I was older, and I eventually took them with me, moving them from apartment to starter home to family home. Over the years, whenever I stumbled on that box, I would flip through those cards and I would recapture that sense of childhood wonder, reminiscing on my favorite cards and players.
When I had a family of my own and my son started to grow up, he developed his own passion for cards. While he loved to go through my baseball cards, his passion was for Pokemon cards. He would collect them and go to the local card shop to battle other kids. Eventually, he too put them in a box and would take them out occasionally, recapturing his joy over his favorite characters and evolutions.
One day, I wanted to give some of my baseball cards to one of my nephews, but did not want to simply hand him some cards in a pile. I wanted to present them on a high-quality display that matched the significance of those cards. While there are a bunch of displays, they simple were not very special. Some displays would try to let you show as many cards as possible, overwhelming the viewer with rows and rows of cards. Other displays would force you to choose only a couple cards from your collection and put them in a display that you could never change.
I also realized that I wanted a way to display my cards in a format that would fit the style of my home. And my son remarked that he wanted a way to display his cards in a format that would fie the style of his apartment. I realized that none of those displays treated the cards like a work of art – which they are.
